Mitchell Hewes

I help people secure computers and neutrons. Occasionally, I go on adventures and always spend far too much time thinking.

So, you found my blog! Why is this here? Well I have spent over a decade working in the dynamic field of computer security for nuclear science and technology. In addition to my professional interests, I am an avid traveler who appreciates experiencing different cultures around the world. Through my work and travels, I have had the privilege of interacting with many remarkable individuals globally, which has enriched me tremendously on a personal level.

The intention behind this is relatively simple — to share and document insights and experiences that may impart value onto others. I have maintained a consistent journaling practice for years and found myself often being paid to pen lengthy emails expounding my professional opinions. Rather than keep these perspectives private, I wanted to edit and publish select writings with the hope of engaging thoughtful readers. I believe disseminating knowledge and personal accounts is fundamental for collective progress.

Regarding my professional capacities, I aim to explore systemic vulnerabilities in human-technology interactions, specifically focusing on computer security weaknesses arising from a misunderstanding of how information, humans, and computers combine to perform important functions. I’ve worked on this topic all over the world, directing efforts to build security resources and capabilities globally, championing a function-based security approach that promotes collaboration between security and engineering, leading the drafting international standards and guidance, and experimenting with technologies to demonstrate the benefits of such cross-disciplinary methodologies.

On a personal note, I am fond of chronicling my adventures through photographs, videos, prose, and other media.

I welcome meaningful dialogue, exploring potential collaborations, or just engaging in a constructive exchanges of ideas. Please feel free to contact me through your preferred method.
